Eye Exams in The Woodlands
When was the last time you had an eye exam? Everyone, from young children to adults of all ages, needs regular eye exams to check vision and general eye health. To optimize the accuracy of your comprehensive eye examination, we equip our office in The Woodlands with state-of-the-art optometric technology. Our experienced eye doctors will check your eyes with skill and compassion, so you benefit from eye exams done right.
Pediatric Eye Exams
Our practice is family friendly, and we’re pleased to offer eye exams for children too. Kids are not simply miniature adults, and we will custom-tailor your child’s eye exam to evaluate her personal condition. We will assess visual acuity thoroughly, as well as all of the functional vision skills that kids need to learn properly and develop normally. Your child will appreciate our eye doctor’s gentle, friendly manner.
Why Are Eye Exams So Important?
- Crisp and Clear Vision
It’s normal for vision to change with age – both in children and adults. As people get older, many typical vision conditions may appear, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and presbyopia. Only a detailed evaluation of your visual acuity will determine your current vision prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses. With children, our eye doctor will look for any vision disorders that could interfere with learning in the classroom and on the sports field.
- Top Quality Eye Health
Using digital technology and cutting-edge diagnostics, our eye doctor in The Woodlands will closely assess your inner eye, optic nerve and retinal tissues. This is the most reliable way to spot the signs of eye disease, such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Because many eye diseases do not cause symptoms during their early stage, there is no other way to diagnose and treat these diseases when they first begin. The earlier we begin treatment, the better your prognosis
- Overall Body Health
Your eyes give us a look at your overall health condition. A number of dangerous medical conditions, such as high cholesterol, diabetes and hypertension, can affect eye health. Therefore, we often detect these conditions before you notice any problem. If our eye doctors see the signs of body disease during your comprehensive eye exam, we will direct you to receive appropriate care from a physician.
What is a comprehensive eye exam?
When you visit our eye care specialists in The Woodlands, we’ll begin your eye exam by getting to know you. This is the foundation of our personalized eye care services. We are interested in your health condition, family eye history and visual expectations and complaints. Depending upon your unique requirements, our optometrist will decide which procedures to perform.
In general, we will assess visual skills, such as focusing, eye mobility and eye teaming, as well as visual acuity. Using high powered magnification and digital optics, we’ll check your retina and optic nerve.
After we perform the necessary tests, we will explain the results to you. An open relationship between patient and eye doctor is essential, and we encourage you to ask any questions you may have. If you need treatment, either to manage an eye disease or treat a vision condition with eyeglasses, contact lenses or vision therapy, we’ll review the options together to decide the most suitable plan.
Don’t wait for a problem with your or your child’s vision or eye health; contact our eye care center today to schedule an exam in The Woodlands. Conveniently located near you!

All Types of Contacts
If you want clear and comfortable vision from your contact lenses, it is important that you wear the right type of contacts for your eyes. Contacts come in an extensive range of options, including daily disposable (dailies), extended wear, multifocals, colored, hard and soft lenses. Here is a basic review of the different options that we offer in our eye care office in The Woodlands.
- Soft Contacts: soft lenses are the most popular type of contacts. Made from specialized plastic mixed with water, the water allows oxygen to reach your cornea. Soft contact lenses are very comfortable and have no adaptation period. Some even offer built-in UV protection.
- Hard Contacts: also known as rigid gas permeable lenses, these durable contact lenses are made from silicone and are highly oxygen permeable for a healthy cornea. Many people find that their vision is crisper with hard lenses. They must be removed and sterilized nightly.
- Multifocal Contacts: people with presbyopia benefit from these lenses, as they enable near and far vision by looking through different prescription zones in the lenses.
- Toric Lenses: used to correct astigmatism, they are available as hard and soft contact lenses
- Scleral Lenses: for hard-to-fit conditions with an irregular cornea, such as keratoconus
- Colored Contacts: these fun contact lenses can change the color of your eyes dramatically or just enhance your natural eye color.
Wearing Schedules for Soft Contact Lenses
Our eye doctors in The Woodlands will perform an eye exam and discuss your lifestyle needs in order to match you with the best type of contacts.
- Daily wear lenses are generally the least expensive. You must remove and disinfect them nightly, and they must be replaced according to schedule (from every two weeks to three months, depending upon the brand).
- Extended wear lenses are designed to be worn overnight. You must remove and disinfect them at least once a week.
- Disposable daily contacts (dailies) are thrown out after each use; there is no maintenance. You insert a fresh new pair every morning. They are the most convenient type of contacts, and can be a great choice for people with allergies.
Brands We Carry in The Woodlands

Vision Therapy Center in The Woodlands
Helping Kids to See Clearly with Pediatric Vision Therapy
Many parents are unfamiliar with the concept of Vision Therapy, also called Optometric Vision Therapy. There is a lot of confusion about what this treatment is, what it can do, and what it cannot do. To clarify and help you understand the basics of vision therapy, please read the following helpful information from your pediatric vision therapy specialists in The Woodlands, TX.
What is the goal of optometric vision therapy?
In short, this treatment aims to enhance visual and ocular performance across the board. Excellent vision depends on much more than visual acuity. Even if your child has 20/20 sight, he or she can still have an ocular condition that requires treatment. Or even if your child was treated with eyeglasses for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, there could be other eye problems that require treatment. Examples of other vision disorders include:
- Convergence insufficiency
- Poor eye teaming (binocularity)
- Convergence excess
- Difficulty with accommodation (focusing)
- Weak eye-hand coordination
If any of these conditions are left untreated, they can severely compromise learning in school and performance on the playing field.
At our Vision Therapy Center in The Woodlands, we will perform a thorough eye exam to determine the specific problem, and then customize therapy sessions to address each individual child’s needs. Our personalized and professional care can prevent the start and development of vision-related learning difficulties.
What happens during a vision therapy session?
At Eye Trends, we are proud to offer a top-notch center for vision therapy near me. Our qualified specialist will design and facilitate your child’s session, which is typically 45 minutes long.
We will use a variety of tools and instruments that are made specially for optometric vision therapy, including beads, balls on a string, wands, prisms, lenses and customized charts. The techniques that we implement will strengthen different parts of the brain that are involved with your child’s visual system.
The success of vision therapy rests heavily upon a good relationship between patient and eye doctor, along with parental support and encouragement. We will assign exercises to be done at home, and positive cooperation is the cornerstone of helping vision therapy to be effective! With regular sessions of pediatric vision therapy and homework being done, children usually show improvement after a few months. Eventually, your child will receive a maintenance program of exercises to be done independently, and we will provide instructions about how often to return for follow-up eye exams.

History of The Woodlands
Whether you’re a long-time resident of our neighborhood or you joined us recently, you may not be familiar with our local history. The Woodlands was established in 1974, by Mr. George Mitchell of the Mitchell Energy Company. As a planned community, it was intended to attract Houston inhabitants to join a calmer neighborhood with a more peaceful way of life. We are proud to attest that the plan worked – and The Woodlands is a beautiful and tranquil residential area.
We are located about 28 miles north of Houston and reached easily along Interstate 45. In addition to picturesque residential streets, The Woodlands is also home to numerous large corporations, such as Huntsman Corporation, Chevron Phillips Chemical, Maersk Line, ExxonMobil and Southwestern Energy.
Shopping & Dining
Between The Woodlands Town Center and Market Street, there is a diverse and enormous array of stores and restaurants to enjoy. We are proud to hold the title of “One of America’s Best Shopping Destinations,” granted by Southern Living Magazine. Many popular department stores stand beside a range of locally-owned boutique shops that you can only explore in The Woodlands Town Center. For a unique experience, we encourage you to park at the Woodland Mall and take the Woodlands Waterway Trolley to Market Street (which also saves you from having to find parking!). Kids love the ride, and adults love the opportunity to relax in the middle of a busy day. Market Street features a first-rate blend of gourmet restaurants, quick bites to eat, upscale shops and affordable retailers.
Outdoor Entertainment
The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is a prominent feature of The Woodlands. Voted as the second best amphitheater in the world, shows are hosted all year round. Take a seat or spread out a blanket to catch a concert, such as the Houston Symphony Orchestra. It’s perfect for a family outing or date night. Another outdoor venue that our Eye Trends staff recommends is the Town Green Park, located nearby along The Woodlands Waterway. With four acres of green lawn, there is a maze for kids and entertainment stages.
Another way to appreciate the Waterway is to see it from the water. Head to the Riva Row Boat House to rent a kayak and glide through our neighborhood. Not in the mood to take your feet off the ground? If you prefer to walk through nature, take a hike in the George Mitchell Nature Preserve. There are many paths and a pleasant circular route.
The Woodlands is filled with fantastic sites to see! Please share your local experiences and recommendations when you visit for your next eye exam.
